CS Professional Exam: Tips to Pass in Your First Attempt

CS Professional Exam Tips to pass in your first attempt - LectureKart

Introduction to CS Professional Exam

CS Professional is the final stage examination of the Company Secretary (CS) Course, which holds great significance in becoming a CS. These exams conducted by ICSI take place twice a year, in June and December, and consist of three modules with three subjects each. While the papers involve descriptive-type questions, it’s worth noting that Paper 8 and 9 are open book examinations, with Paper 9 being an Elective Paper.

To ensure success in your first attempt, it’s crucial to follow the correct preparation strategy while covering the extensive syllabus. Here are some tips to help you effectively sail through the exam:

#1 Selecting the Right Study Materials

To prepare for the exam, gather all necessary study materials ahead of time. While some students prefer ICSI study materials, it’s essential to consider well-known author books as well. Striking a balance between the Institute study material and other resources can be beneficial.

#2 Choosing between Classes or Self-Study

Deciding between attending coaching classes or self-study is a critical decision. Analyze the syllabus to understand its vastness. Coaching classes often provide valuable guidance in understanding concepts, as opposed to simply memorizing topics.

#3 Prioritizing Important Topics

Emphasize the most important topics and concentrate on concepts that have been frequently asked in past exams. Underline and highlight important keywords while studying to replicate them in the exams. Creating concise notes or flowcharts can simplify complex concepts and aid in revision.

#4 Practice Makes Perfect

Make a conscious effort to prioritize challenging tasks over easier ones. Determine your strong and weak subjects, allocating time and effort accordingly. Solving question papers builds confidence and helps manage time effectively.

#5 Create a Study Schedule and Plan

Before starting your studies, create a study plan that outlines all the topics to be covered and the time dedicated to each. Short-term plans of a week or less will help you focus on the present and avoid procrastination.

#6 Overall Management

Self-management is crucial. Stay updated by reading relevant newspapers to incorporate current examples in your answers, improving response quality and grades. Prioritize physical activity and mental refreshment to maintain good health. Enjoy the journey rather than focusing solely on the end goal.

#7 Attempting the Exam Smartly

Having your own strategy, developed through mock tests, can be advantageous. Attempt the entire paper and ensure coverage of all questions. During evaluation, examiners look for keywords, so highlighting them is essential.

By following the correct preparation strategy, maintaining perseverance and hard work, and utilizing available resources, you can pass the CS Professional Examinations with flying colors.

The Company Law CS Executive - All you need to know - LectureKart

The CS Executive Company Law Paper - An Introduction

Company Law is Paper 2 of Module 1 in the CS Executive examination conducted by ICSI. It is one of the most difficult papers to score marks in and this is mostly because students fail to understand the pattern of the paper. Today we are going to focus on two important aspects:

  1. Break down and understand the pattern of the paper as per the latest ICSI guideline
  2. Take a look at the ICSI suggestion list in a FAQ pattern for better understanding of the paper.

So lets get started without wasting any time.

Is the CS Executive Company Law Paper subjective or objective?

The Company Law Paper consists of only subjective questions.

What are the types of questions asked in Company Law Paper?

There are two types of questions asked in the Company Law Paper:

  1. Direct Questions
  2. Case Study Based Questions

How many Case Study Based Questions and Direct Questions are asked in the Company Law Paper?

Generally, the amount of case study based questions that are asked in the Company Law Paper constitutes around 65-70% of the paper. These questions are either of 3 marks, 4 marks or 5 marks and in some cases, 8 marks. The direct questions asked in the Company Law Paper constitute around 30-35% of the paper. These questions are generally of 3 marks, 4 marks or 5 marks.

What are Case Study Based Questions & What are the different types?

In Case Study Based Questions, a scenario is given to the student. First the student has to understand the scenario, understand the provisions / precedent applicable to it. Then apply the provisions / precedent to the situation and finally reach a conclusion on that basis.

There are two types of Case Study Based Questions:

  1. Provision based
These are the questions that are based upon the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013, the Companies (Rules), 2014 and any circulars and notifications issued by MCA.
  2. Precedent based
These are the questions that are based upon landmark judgements.

How many students pass in the Company Law Paper?

As per the e-journal issued by ICSI, more than 65% of the students fail to score more than 40 marks in the Company Law Paper and therefore fail the paper. Accordingly, less than 35% of the students pass the Company Law Paper.

How many students score above 60 marks in the Company Law Paper?

As per the e-journal issued by ICSI, only 2.13% of the students who attempt the exam score more than 60 marks in the paper while around 10% of the students score between 50-59 marks. The rest i.e. around 22% of the students who attempt the exam score between 40-49 marks.

How to score more in the Company Law Paper?

As a majority of the questions are in a case study pattern, it is pertinent that the student has a good understanding of how to approach these types of questions. Majority of the students who fail to score in the Company Law Paper lack understanding of these types of questions.

How to solve a case study based question?

The best way to solve case study based questions is to follow the approach created by CS Midhas Purohit. We call it the ‘PAC’ Technique. In the PAC Technique

  • P stands for Provisions wherein the student recognizes and mentions the sections/rules applicable to the given question.
  • A stands for Applicability of the Provisions wherein the student applies the provisions mentioned above to the scenario created in the question.
  • C stands for Conclusion wherein the student concludes the answer.

This approach is guaranteed to cover all the points that an examiner is seeking. Therefore it is guaranteed to get you more marks in the exam.

Where can I find good case study based questions and solved answers?

The ICSI module does not provide case study based questions and answers. Therefore a student shall have to look for other resources in order to understand the correct way to answer case study based questions in CS Executive. There is lots of material available on the internet on case study based questions. But these are majorly prepared by inexperienced bloggers and content creators. We have seen a lot of mistakes in the answers provided by people on the internet. So you need to be very careful before you start studying from such sources.

Never rely on the answers that are NOT PREPARED by professionals and experienced teachers.

So if you are searching for good case studies with excellent answers, then you have come to the right place. LectureKart provides “The Company Law Case Study Compiler by CS Midhas Purohit For CS Executive”.

How To Write Amazing Answers in CA CS CMA Subjective Exam Papers

How To Write Amazing Answers in CA CS CMA Subjective Papers by CS Aditi Pant

Write flawless answers in CA CS CMA Subjective Papers

Scoring good marks in subjective papers of CA, CS and CMA is not just about knowledge, but also how you go about writing your answers. The way you present your answers on paper plays a big role in your final score. ICAI, ICSI & ICMAI expect you to write answers that not only read great but look great too.

RULE OF THUMB
Thorough studies fetch you marks in the range of 40-45, but good presentation takes you to 60+ marks OR EXEMPTION in your papers.

In this article I will teach you how to write knowledgeable and eye pleasing answers in your upcoming exams of CA, CS and CMA. Note that these techniques are equally relevant for OLD & NEW syllabus of ICSI, ICAI & ICMAI.

OK. Lets start.

The techniques discussed here can be divided into three sections, which I will discuss one by one:

  1. Theoretical Questions
  2. Practical Questions
  3. Case Study based Questions

8 Tips To Write Perfect answers for theoretical questions

Tip 1

First step is to mandatorily leave and draw margins on both sides of paper.

Tip 2

Answers should be written in point format with maximum 2 to 3 sentences in one point. Avoid long paragraphs and sentences.

Tip 3

Leave sufficient space between two points or paragraphs. Inculcate the habit of writing one answer in one page, even if the answer is over in half page. If your answer is broken/divided in two pages then it gives the impression of half answer to the paper checker. Your job is to make paper reading and checking easy for checker.

Tip 4

Every answer/point/paragraph has some important words or legal jargons. Underline them wherever possible. This makes paper checker’s work easier. Underlining the words or jargons shows your confidence and can lead you to fetch more marks.

Tip 5

Quote the Case Laws, whenever possible. I believe in simple funda,

WHEN YOU KNOW IT, FLAUNT IT

Make sure that you quote correct Case Laws. Giving reference of wrong Case Laws may lead to loosing marks.

Tip 6

Quote the Act with the year. Always remember that you quote the correct and relevant Act along with correct year or else you will end up loosing marks.

Tip 7

Emphasize more on Quality rather than Quantity. Remember ICAI, ICSI & ICMAI are Professional Bodies and they expect quality and to the point answers from you.

Tip 8

Quote the Sections, Clauses, Standards (Auditing/Accounting/Secretarial) only when you are confident about them. IF you are not sure then DON’T QUOTE IT AT ALL.

4 Tips To Write Precise answers for Practical Questions

Tip 1

As suggested earlier, leave and draw margins on both sides of paper, even if it is practical subject.

Tip 2

Have clear understanding of the various measurements/units/currencies asked in the questions. Many students get confused in this and while writing answers interchange the same. Do not leave to the imagination of paper checker for what the numbers represent in your working notes and final answer. For example, if the entire question is calculated on the basis of percentages then make sure to mention percentages everywhere. Also double underline your final answer.

Tip 3

Always write the Formulas clearly if the question demands so and preferably box the formula.

Tip 4

Always try to attempt the full paper as it increases your chances of making the average. Even if you are not fully confident about the answer, try to attempt the question as much as possible. As the saying goes, “Something is better than nothing”. Same funda applies here. Never leave a question blank. Write something (obviously logical and related to the topic asked in the question) because provision of marks for step marking are there in professional papers.

Case Study based Questions

FACTS

Find all the possible data and facts related to the case study and write it down in point-wise manner.

ANALYSIS

Use the facts and figures gathered in previous step to analyze the case from logical point of view. Make sure that you are not making any unwanted assumptions

CONCLUSION

Always end your answer with a Conclusion, where you explain the outcome of your analysis to the examiner. This leaves a good impression on your paper checker.

For an in-depth approach on HOW TO ATTEMPT CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS, click on the link at the end of this article. The link will take you to an amazing article written by CS Midhas Purohit on attempting case study based questions.

Final Words

It may seem daunting at first to keep so many things in mind while writing answers. But, all of this will come to you naturally if you practice these techniques on a daily basis. Initially you will make mistakes for sure. So just keep trying to learn from your mistakes and always read your answers twice after writing them. Highlight your shortcoming and rework on them. And a day will come when you will observe that your answers are almost PERFECT.

If you like this article then share it with your friends. If you have any doubt then leave a comment and I will try to answer them as soon as possible.

Happy learning 😊
