ICAI New Syllabus & Scheme – All You Need to Know in 2023

ICAI has proposed major changes in the syllabus and scheme of Chartered Accountancy going in to 2023. As a student of CA, it is extremely important that you should have a clear idea about all the changes under new scheme that may come into effect in the future. In this post, We will discuss everything that you need to know as a CA aspirant.

My Dear Students,

You all know that The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India ICAI has proposed some big changes in the new syllabus and scheme for CA in 2023. In the latest update issued through their official website, ICAI has provided us a PDF that talks about all these changes. Today I am going to summarize all these changes and its impact on you as a CA student. At the end of this post, you will find a download link for the annotated PDF with all the major changes highlighted.

But before that, lets quickly go through all the important changes that you could see in the scheme and syllabus of Chartered Accountancy Course.

Good News For Students in the ICAI New Syllabus & Scheme in 2023

  • Reduction in number of Papers

    The number of papers in CA Final and CA Intermediate has been reduced from 8 to 6 respectively.

  • Validity of Registration

    The validity of registration has been amended. The entry to the course is now a bit harder while the exit has been made easier.

  • Study Period Reduced

    No need of 9 months Practical Training (Articleship) for direct entry students to CA Intermediate. Straightforward 8 months study period applicable for every CA Inter student.

  • Practical Training Time Reduced

    The tenure of practical training has been reduced from 3 years to 2 years in the new ICAI syllabus for 2023.

  • Open Book & Restricted Book Papers Introduced

    ICAI has decided to introduce open book and restricted book papers to the CA Final exams.

  • Finally the Exit Route is Here

    Once a student completes CA Intermediate and Articleship, he will be awarded a Business Accounting Associate Certificate.

  • Introduction of Mandatory Self Paced module

    ICAI has moved some papers to Self Paced Modules, which is nothing but Subjects that you can study at your own pace and choice. Just note that marks in these papers will not be added to your exams.

  • 100% Increase in Stipend

    ICAI has declared that the stipend given to students during articleship will be doubled. Well as a student, who doesn't want a little bit more in pocket money.

  • Major Changes in Exemption

    ICAI has introduced some major changes in exemption in CA Inter and CA Final. We will discuss this in detail, but rest assured there are some good news here for CA students.

Not so Good News For Students in the ICAI New Syllabus & Scheme in 2023

  • CA Foundation Passing Criteria

    The individual subject passing percentage has been increased from 40% to 50%. The aggregate passing percentage is still the same i.e. 50%.

  • Negative Marking is Back

    Negative marking has been introduced in CA Intermediate and CA Final exams.

  • Reduction in Number of Leaves

    The number of leaves a student can avail in CA Articleship has been reduced to ONLY 12 per year. So a total of 24 leaves granted in a span of 2 years.
